about me

Hi there! I'm Kayla. I cover state politics and government for The Texas Tribune. I've also written about the death penalty and Texas’ legal system, in addition to state energy policy. I'm based in Austin.

I previously covered Congress for The New York Times as the 2023-24 Rosenbaum reporting fellow. There, I covered some of the biggest news out of Washington, including Speaker Kevin McCarthy's ouster, progressive anguish over the war in Gaza and the doomed bipartisan border bill. I led The Times' coverage of the 5-year reauthorization of the FAA, following the package from committee through enactment, and of the Smith-Wyden tax bill.

Before The Times, I covered transportation policy as an intern at Politico, where I helmed Morning Transportation, a daily newsletter. I’ve also reported on local news for the Raleigh News & Observer and for Patch on Long Island, and I’ve worked part-time as a digital producer for The Boston Globe.

I graduated in December 2022 from Brown University, where I studied public policy and served as editor-in-chief and president of The Brown Daily Herald. As EIC, I managed a 275+ member staff and edited and oversaw news and opinions content daily. Before that, I covered student government and activism as a beat reporter.
